Ten tips for successful linking

  • Know what you're getting into - successful partnerships take significant investment in time and resources.
  • Form a partnership agreement - lay out objectives, expectations and responsibilities from the start.
  • Keep talking - this applies both within schools as well as between them. Partners must feel comfortable voicing concerns.
  • Embed the partnership in the curriculum - the desire for new educational opportunities is the best basis for an equal partnership and productive learning experience.
  • Be patient - it takes time to find the appropriate partner and build the trust necessary for joint working.
  • Keep on an equal footing - the best partnerships are characterised by joint decision-making and mutual respect.
  • Acknowledge imbalances and differences - put systems in place to handle disagreements and review the partnership regularly.
  • Embed tolerance at home first - students need to feel comfortable with diversity in their own school before moving on to others.
  • Involve others - include both those in the school and the wider community.
  • Try local partnerships first - this can give you experience in the "mechanics" of linking without the additional pressure of an unfamiliar context.
